The history of the "Fifth Quarter"
Some one hundred and fifty years ago, we were a country of rugged and independent people often living great distances apart. Any excuse to get together was a good one.
Invariably, the highlight of any gathering was a shooting match with ole' time muzzle-loading rifles. And most especially, the event know as the "Beef Shoot." Here marksmen vied for the first prize which was the most desirable portions of the steer. The "Fifth Quarter."
----------
The FIfth Quarter Restaurant was created by Raymond L. Danner of Nashville, and opened in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1973 on Thompson Lane at Murfreesboro Road.
Ray was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. This is where the second Fifth Quarter was opened on Durrett Lane in 1978.
With ALex Schoenbaum, a business partner living in Charleston, West Virginia, Ray decided to open the third Fifth Quarter in 1981 in downtown Charleston at the corner of Clendenin and Quarrier Streets.
Ray believed in serving the freshest and highest quality food available at a good price by courteous employees, in a clean restaurant.
